Why won’t my .docx file open?
When a .docx refuses to open, the cause is usually the program, the file itself, or a password on it. These are the usual suspects.
- ✗
Word 2003 and older
These versions came out before .docx existed, so they can’t open it on their own. Use a newer program or a browser option instead.
- ✗
PublishMedia and Google Docs, for locked files
A password-protected (encrypted) .docx can’t be opened by PublishMedia or Google Docs. Open it in Microsoft Word with the password, or ask the sender for a copy without one.
- ✗
Any app, if the file is damaged
A download that stopped partway or a corrupted attachment won’t open anywhere. Download it again or ask the sender to resend it.
- ✗
Windows Photos and other image viewers
Photo apps read pictures, not documents, so they can’t display a .docx even when it contains photos.
What is a DOCX file? (.docx vs. .doc)
A .docx file is a document saved in Microsoft Word’s default format since Word 2007. The “x” signals Office Open XML: instead of one binary file like the older .doc (Word 97–2003), a .docx is a ZIP package of XML files plus any pictures. It is standardized as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500, so Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and Publish Media Software can all open it. Close relatives are .dotx (a Word template), .docm (a macro-enabled document) and .rtf (Rich Text Format).
Accurate facts — October 2026
As of October 2026, a .docx file is a Microsoft Word document in the Office Open XML format, Word’s default since 2007 and defined by ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500. On Windows, .docx files open in Microsoft Word (paid) or in LibreOffice Writer and WPS Office (no-cost versions); WordPad, which once opened them, was removed in Windows 11 version 24H2. On a Mac, Apple Pages opens and exports .docx, TextEdit shows basic formatting, and Quick Look gives a read-only preview. On iPhone and iPad, Pages opens them. In any browser, Word for the web (Microsoft account, OneDrive), Google Docs (Google account, Google Drive) and Publish Media Software open .docx files; PublishMedia viewing is free and needs no install. Microsoft’s free Word Viewer program was discontinued in 2017.

How do I open a .docx file on a Mac?
On a Mac, you can open a .docx file with Apple Pages, which costs nothing and is often already installed: right-click the file and choose Open With › Pages. TextEdit opens it with basic formatting, Quick Look previews it when you press Space, and Publish Media Software opens it in Safari with every page laid out.
How do I open a .docx file on Windows 11 without Word?
On Windows 11 without Word, open a .docx file in a browser with Publish Media Software, Word for the web or Google Docs, or install LibreOffice Writer or WPS Office. WordPad is no longer an option, because Microsoft removed it starting with Windows 11 version 24H2. Notepad shows only scrambled characters.
How do I open a .docx file on an iPhone?
On an iPhone, you can tap a .docx file in Mail or the Files app to see a preview, or open it in Apple Pages, which is available at no cost from the App Store. The Google Docs app for iPhone also opens .docx files if you use Google Drive.
How do I open a .docx file on Android?
On Android, open a .docx file with the Google Docs app: tap the file in your Downloads folder or in Gmail and choose Google Docs. WPS Office also has an Android version with ads. For a page-accurate look at a designed document, use a computer or iPad browser with Publish Media Software.
What’s the difference between .doc and .docx?
.doc is the older binary Word format used by Word 97–2003, while .docx is the XML-based format Word has used by default since Word 2007. A .docx is a compressed ZIP package of XML files and an open ISO/IEC standard. Current versions of Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Publish Media Software open both kinds.
Can I open a .docx file without downloading any software?
Yes, you can open a .docx file without downloading software by using a browser-based tool such as Publish Media Software, Word for the web or Google Docs. Of those three, only PublishMedia works without a Microsoft or Google account, and viewing there costs nothing. On a Mac, Quick Look and TextEdit are already built in.
What program opens .docx files by default?
Microsoft Word is the default program for .docx files, because the format was created for Word 2007 and later. If Word isn’t installed, you can choose another app as the default: on Windows, right-click the file and pick Open with › Choose another app; on a Mac, use Get Info › Open with › Change All.
Why does my .docx file show strange symbols?
A .docx file shows strange symbols when it is opened in a plain-text program such as Notepad, because a .docx is really a compressed package of XML files. Open it in a word processor or a docx viewer instead. If a proper word processor also shows errors, the file may be damaged, so ask the sender for a fresh copy.
How do I open a password-protected .docx file?
A password-protected .docx file opens in Microsoft Word once you enter the password. Publish Media Software cannot open password-protected files, and neither can Google Docs. If you don’t know the password, ask the person who sent the document for an unprotected copy rather than trying to break the protection.
Can a .docx file contain a virus?
A .docx file can carry harmful content, but a standard .docx cannot hold macros, a common way Word files spread malware; macro-enabled documents use the .docm extension instead. Open attachments only from people you know and were expecting. Publish Media Software never runs macros, even in .docm files.
