  1. 1. Publish Media Software — Shows each worksheet as printable pages with its formatting, charts and pictures, and opens .xls, .csv and .ods files as well. Free-plan files are deleted after 7 days, and it is not a tool for data analysis or pivot tables.
  2. 2. Excel for the web — Microsoft's own browser version opens and edits .xlsx workbooks at no cost. You need a Microsoft account, files go into OneDrive, and it has fewer features than desktop Excel.
  3. 3. Google Sheets — Opens .xlsx files uploaded to Google Drive and is handy for lists you share. VBA macros don't run there, and some Excel features and formatting don't carry over.
  4. 4. LibreOffice Calc — A full desktop spreadsheet that opens and saves .xlsx and .xls and works offline once installed. It is a big download just to look at one file.
  5. 5. Apple Numbers — Apple's spreadsheet app opens .xlsx files and can export them back to Excel. The app runs only on Apple devices, and some Excel features may not carry over.
  6. 6. Microsoft Excel (desktop) — The program the format was built for, and the reference for how a workbook should look and behave. It costs money and has to be installed, which is a lot just to view a file.
  7. 7. WPS Office — An office suite whose spreadsheet app opens .xlsx workbooks. The free version shows ads, and the suite has to be installed first.
  8. 8. Quick Look (Mac) — Select the .xlsx in Finder and press Space for a read-only preview. It is a peek at the contents, not a place to work with the file.

What is an .xlsx file?

An .xlsx file is a Microsoft Excel workbook saved in the Office Open XML spreadsheet format, also called SpreadsheetML. Excel has used it as its default since Excel 2007, replacing the binary .xls format of Excel 97–2003. Inside, an .xlsx is a ZIP package of XML parts (one for each worksheet, plus shared text, styles and charts), with any pictures stored alongside. The format is standardized as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500. Each worksheet can hold 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, against 65,536 rows and 256 columns in an .xls.

Who needs an Excel viewer online?

Church and club treasurers

Open the monthly budget or giving report a committee member sent, and look it over before the meeting without Excel on the office PC.

Teachers and coaches

See a grade sheet, class roster or team schedule on a school Chromebook, one worksheet at a time.

Small-business owners

Check a supplier's price list or your bookkeeper's workbook with every column and total where it was made.

Volunteer coordinators

Open the .xls sign-up and attendance exports from event and donor websites, which are often web pages wearing an Excel name.

Students

Read a lab data sheet or a group-project budget on a library computer and see how it will look on paper.

Retirees and families

Look over a reunion guest list, a club dues sheet or a bank's .csv download on a Mac, iPad or shared computer.

Which programs can't open Excel files?

If an Excel file shows gibberish or nothing at all, the program you tried was never built for workbooks, or it no longer exists.

  • ✗

    Notepad

An .xlsx is a compressed package of XML parts, so Notepad fills the screen with symbols. A .csv is the exception: it is plain text, and Notepad shows the raw values separated by commas.

  • ✗

    Microsoft Excel Viewer

Microsoft retired its standalone Excel Viewer program in April 2018, so it is no longer offered or updated.

  • ✗

    Adobe Acrobat Reader

Acrobat Reader is made for PDF files, not workbooks. A sheet has to be turned into a PDF before Reader can show it.

  • ✗

Windows Photos and other image viewers

Photo apps read pictures only, so they can't display a workbook, even one that contains charts or a logo.

Excel viewer FAQs: .xlsx, .xls and .csv

Is the PublishMedia xlsx viewer free?

Yes, opening and viewing Excel workbooks in Publish Media Software (PublishMedia) is free, with no cap on how many files you open. No credit card is needed to sign up. Free-plan files are kept for 7 days and then deleted automatically, after a reminder email the day before. Changing cells, saving projects and making a PDF come with the paid plans: $99 a year or $9.99 a month.

Can I view an old .xls file from Excel 97–2003 online?

Yes, Publish Media Software opens old .xls workbooks from Excel 97–2003 in a browser, along with modern .xlsx files. It also reads Excel 2003 XML spreadsheets, very old Excel 2–4 files, .xlsb binary workbooks and .xltx templates. Each sheet appears as pages with its values and formatting, up to 100 MB per file.

Will an online Excel viewer show my formulas or just the results?

Publish Media Software shows formulas as their calculated results in its page view, the same numbers a printed copy of the sheet would show. To see the formulas themselves and have them recalculate, open the workbook in the spreadsheet view with the Edit in Excel button. Changing cells in that view is part of a paid plan.

Why does the .xls file from my bank or donor site look strange?

Many bank, donor and attendance websites export a file named .xls that is really a web page (an HTML table), so Excel warns that the format and extension don't match. Publish Media Software recognizes these web-page .xls files and opens them as an ordinary sheet you can read and check in Print Preview.

Can the xlsx viewer open .csv and .tsv files?

Yes, Publish Media Software opens .csv (comma-separated) and .tsv (tab-separated) files as a sheet, alongside .xlsx, .xls and OpenDocument .ods workbooks. A .csv is plain text with one sheet and no formatting or saved formulas, so what you see is the data alone. On a paid plan you can add a title or notes in the page editor before printing.

Can I view an Excel file on a Chromebook?

Yes, Publish Media Software runs in Chrome on a Chromebook, so you can drag an .xlsx from the Files app into the window and read each sheet as pages. Google Sheets also opens Excel files on a Chromebook through Google Drive, though VBA macros don't run there and some Excel formatting doesn't carry over.

Does Microsoft still make a free Excel Viewer?

No, Microsoft retired its standalone Excel Viewer program in April 2018, and it is no longer offered. The closest Microsoft option today is Excel for the web, which costs nothing with a Microsoft account and stores files in OneDrive. Without a Microsoft account, a browser-based viewer such as Publish Media Software opens .xlsx and .xls files.

Is it safe to open a macro workbook (.xlsm) in an online viewer?

Opening an .xlsm in Publish Media Software won't set off its macro code, because PublishMedia never runs macros; the sheets open with their values and formatting only. Your workbook is encrypted on its way to us and is never used for public templates. As with any attachment, open only workbooks you expected, from people you know.

Can I see every tab of a workbook, or only the first sheet?

Publish Media Software shows every worksheet in a workbook, not only the first: each sheet opens as its own set of pages, laid out the way Excel prints it. Where a sheet has a print area set, its pages follow that area, as a printout would. In the spreadsheet view you can also click between the sheets.
