Frequently asked questions
What is a photo ID card template?
A photo ID card template is a pre-formatted layout for identification cards — typically showing a person's name, title or role, organization name, an ID number, and a photo area. You print the card, cut it to size, and optionally laminate it or insert it into a card sleeve.
What size are standard ID cards?
Standard ID cards are the same size as a credit card: 3.375"×2.125" (CR-80 format). Our template is designed larger (for editing clarity) and scales proportionally to this size when printed at a print shop on card stock or through a PVC ID card printer.
How do I print ID cards at home without a card printer?
Download the PDF, print on 65–80 lb cardstock at your home printer, and cut to size with a paper trimmer. Insert into a plastic card sleeve or laminate with a home laminator for durability. The result is a functional ID card appropriate for most internal business, school, or volunteer identification needs.
Can I add a photo to the ID card template?
Yes. The template includes a photo zone — upload a headshot photo (ideally a square crop at 150+ DPI) and it fills the photo area. Our editor keeps the photo in the card layout without distortion.
Do I need a special printer for ID cards?
Not for our template format. A standard inkjet or laser printer on cardstock produces a functional ID card. Dedicated PVC card printers (like Zebra or Fargo models) print directly onto credit-card-sized plastic stock for a more professional result — but they cost $300–$3,000. For most organizations, the laminated cardstock approach is sufficient.
Can I add a barcode or magnetic stripe to a printed ID card?
A barcode image can be added to the template's image zone — generate a Code 128 or Code 39 barcode in any online barcode generator, save as PNG, and upload it. Magnetic stripes require a dedicated PVC card printer with an encoding module — that's outside the scope of a printable template.
